How to manage difficult emotions
We all have some amount of:
anxiety
fear
doubt
frustration
overwhelm
confusion
These are human emotions.
The goal is not to “eradicate” them.
That’s not a realistic or achievable goal.
The goal is to MANAGE and MINIMIZE them.
The best way I have found to do this is a simple yet effective method.
First:
Think about something that brings up any of those emotions for you. Here they are again:
anxiety
fear
doubt
frustration
overwhelm
confusion
Next:
Think about what “commitment” would PUSH this feeling out of the way.
We have all heard that it’s impossible to hold two emotions like anger and gratitude in the body at the same time right?
I have found that it’s also impossible for me to hang on to any of those feelings above while at the same time focusing on the commitment that solves the issue.
Some Examples:
“I am having anxiety around making enough money next year”
becomes:
“I am committed to making enough money next year”
“I have a lot of fear that I will never be successful”
becomes:
“I am committed to becoming successful”
“I feel overwhelmed with my schedule and I have so much frustration around how I will ever get everything done”
becomes:
“I am committed to working on my time management and focusing on following through on my most important responsibilities”
I said it was SIMPLE right!?
For something to be EFFECTIVE, it does not need to be COMPLICATED.
Often the simplest of all is actually what we need the most.
Give this technique a try and see if it helps bring that small spark of positive mindset we need to shift our energy just slightly in a NEW DIRECTION.
